Two schools of thought on switching from non-detergent to detergent: Some here have said that they made the change and have had no problems at all. Others have said that their tractor started smoking and/or burning oil after making the change. I would say that if your engine is tight and relatively clean, switching to detergent shouldn't hurt anything. Even at this, I'd change the detergent oil and the filter more often for the first few changes, as it probably will work loose the existing deposits. My personal thoughts on this are to just make the change, and if the engine begins to leak/smoke, I would just do an overhaul. You may not wish to do this. Everyone of us sees things differently. As for a filter, you can get one at most any IH dealer or NAPA auto store.
