You can use the original generator as long as you change the regulator or cutout to a 12 volt. The 6-volt gen puts out over 15 volts open-cicuit (with no battery to charge, no lights on), so it will charge a 12 volt battery no problem. Mine charges at about 4-5 amps full throttle. I also put in diodes (instead of the cutout) so I can run the same gen with either 6 or 12 volts. They are very cheap. I have mag so ignition isn't affected. I only have to worry about the light bulbs.
