Generally the generic auto-parts thermostat will be different and not as good. The typical automotive thermostat will cause the water pump to be deadheaded until the engine warms up, and won't shut off the the recycle flow when it does warm up (interestingly enough, running without the thermostat has this same drawback). Whether or not it is worth 4 or 5 times as much to buy the IH part is up to you to decide. I've noticed my tractor ends up warming up much quicker and better in cold weather since I've put the IH thermostat in, but your mileage may vary.
