First and reverse share a sliding gear on the input shaft of the transmission. The gear has a very small dia. and gets worn. When it slides foward it engages 1st gear in the bottom of the trans and when slid back it engages the reverse counter gear. The gear is still availible from IH but it costs about $70.00. You will need to split the tractor just ahead of the trans to pull the long input shaft. When I did mine I was also replacing the brakes so I had the final drives off and just slid the trans off the toque tube.
