Some models pulled the decompression lever back to start and other models pushed it forward, depending on the linkage. Mine pulls back, but I've seen ones that you had to push forward. The starting position is the one that it LATCHES in. The diesel throttle should be down (off) to start. Once the engine is running on gas you can open the diesel throttle up about to the idle position to bleed the injectors, however, the linkage to the starting lever won't let you open the diesel throttle much farther than the idle position until you switch over to diesel.
