I read a similar post about a month ago and that particular gentleman had frost on his carb.I wrote a post about it and thought this would be a good time to rewrite it.At one time I flew small planes.They were prone to ice building up in the carb throat if conditions were right.The temperature in the carb throat drops to -50degF due to the fast evaporation rate of the fuel and the high velocity of the air through the venturi.You can see the same thing happen to the exhaust on air tools on humid days or fittings on LP tanks collecting frost at high demand.The carb in an aircraft can actually freeze shut if the pilot does not keep an eye on aircraft performance and manifold pressure.If the pilot notes a drop in manifold pressure he or she can turn on carb heat to run air that has been preheated by the exhaust manifold to the carb throat to melt out the ice.I know this is a little off topic,but it is the best explaination of carb frost/ice that I know of.
