If you have a magneto you do not need a generator to run the engine as it supplys the power to the points. If you want to run lights then you must use a battery and that will have to be recharged. Now you need a generator. To check to see if you have a magneto remove the battery cables and firmly grasp the little stud with the nut and wire on it that protrudes from the unit behind the distributor cap and sharply crank the engine over with the IHC supplied hand crank. If it puts you on your butt saying the name of our saviour then you have a magneto. If you need any further information be glad to help. J
