Ed, It is always better to check reality first than to get a reality check later! In 1979 I bought a new 1980 F150 with the 4 speed overdrive. That was just before gas went from 54 cents to $1.20 in early 1980. The truck would get 24 on the highway, but was not meant for pulling. In the spring of 80 those transmissions were back ordered (the plant in Mexico was on strike) and no one was looking for gas guslers. I recapped the bulk of my money and purchased a new F250 with a 351 and a C-6 and never looked back. I have made sure my new trucks since have had the heavy transmissions, an appropriate axle ratio and aux. transmission coolers. Picking is easier than modifying.
