Me, I pull the plugs to eliminate the compression, and the coil wire to keep the stray sparks down, and then give it about 6 or eight cycles of 20-30 second turns on the starter to get the oil up through everything, not just the cylinders. A little oil on top of the pistons like you're talking about can't hurt, might help, and since you'll have the plugs out anyway . . . Amazin' how easy she'll crank with no plugs in. Works for me.
