I'm assuming you have a narrow front. It does sound like the front seal, but I'd eliminate the timing cover gasket and the front of the valve cover gasket first. If it is the front seal you should be able to trace your leak to behind the crankshaft pulley. If that's the case, you'll have to take the front end casting away from the engine. (Some folks would call this splitting, but I prefer to save that for the joint between the engine and the torque tube) The ugliest part of the job may turn out to be getting the pulley off. In my case that involved a lot of heat and language my grandmother would not approve of! The seal we are talking about is seated on the back (engine) side of the timing case cover. Set in a new one, center it up nicely as you put the timing cover back on, making sure it doesn't move as you tighten things down. Put the pulley back on, remount the frontand hook things back up. If you do have to go this far, another tip (one I thankfully did not have to learn the hard way) is to take off the water pump before you loosen up the front end. IF not, you run a pretty good chance of tearing up the drain pipe or, worse, the bottom edge of the pump if the front end swings the wrong direction on you. In my case, I took the radiator off, as well. It seemed good insurance given the cost of a replacement and, in the end, made it a lot easier lifting the front end to swing it away. (Mine's a wide front-I'd think a narrow would be even harder to wrassle.)Apart from the pulley, not all that bad a job, though.

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
