Howdy Mr. J: The lifters are separate from the push rod guides and measure about 4' in length when you get them out. (the push rod guides are just holes in the block) As the Red Baron says, squirt them from underneath with liquid wrench, wd-40, etc. With a long punch, gently tap them up from the bottom and then tap them down from the top with a push rod. (Be Gentle, don't force anything, or you'll bend the push rod.) Continue the process until they will move into a position that you can remove the cam. ( The cam must be removed to get two of the lifters out.) They come out from the bottom end. You will probably want to remove them, as the receptacle for the push rod will be undoubtedly be full of grim and gunk. The only way I have found to clean them adequately is by removal. Brad A (ore)
