Timing an SM with a timing light is straightforward. Simply clamp the pickup (or sparkplug adapter) onto the #1 cyl plug wire. Then with the motor running at low idle, rotate the distributor until the TDC timing mark (single notch on the crank pulley rear flange) aligns with the pointer on the gear cover. Tighten dist clamp bolt and you're all set! Don't know offhand what the dwell angle should be. But if you set the point gap at 0.020 the dwell will be good.
