The jar is to collect larger particals with in the air that is circulated through the system. This will indeed include bugs, chaff, ext. The oil bath portion of cleaner is where the smaller particals are taken out of the air. This would include your finer and lighter dust particals. The jar prevents the larger particals from getting in the oil allowing the oil to stay more cleaner. There should be some information on decals or in operators manuel in regards to servicing the air cleaner and how often it should be serviced.
