Excellent suggestion Dave! I can't count the number of times charging system problems have been traced to a poorly grounded component somewhere... I've taken grounding a step farther on my old 6 volt stuff: I add an additional, supplementary "ground" wire to wiring harness. Start at the generator (ground to one of the pivot bolts). Then run to the voltage regulator or cutout and ground it to the relay base. Then on to the ammeter box - ground under a mounting bolt. Finally to the battery ground cable or strap - attach beneath the frame mounting bolt. I run it in #14 wire, and use suitably sized ring connectors (crimped and soldered) and use internally toothed lockwashers under each terminal. Yeah, I know it's not "original", but it's saved me a lot of frustration on infrequently used machines equipped with 6 volt electrics.
