Is the backfire through the exhaust or back through the carb.? Either could mean carbon buildup on a valve. Carbon can be removed (sometimes) by carb., upper cylinder cleaner. I have an old adapter made by gumout that you screw a can of liquid onto. The adapter replaces the fuel line at the carb. so pure cleaner is run through the engine. Since screw caps disappeared, I use an old can that fit the thread and cut the bottom out, anyway the cleaner softened the carbon overnight(stall the engine with cleaner)and next day (after reattaching fuel line) the engine smoothed out after 15-20 min. I have also done this with aerosol when I could'nt find my adapter. If you try this and it does'nt work, you are just out some time and $2-3 bucks. If it does you've saved a bunch!
