Morning all;

I have been cleaning, and overhauling a few carb's lately, and have found one particular carb/re-pop, that gives me more headaches than they should.

There is another carb. that I have had NO probs. with ,at all.

Both carb's, carry the same part #, 8N9510C. One is listed as 8N9510C-Black. The carb. that I have had no prob's with, Is approx. $20.00 cheaper , than the other. ( Go figure?????)

I'm showing both carbs, listed so you will know what they look like.

carb #1....8N9510C-Black---- PROBLEM CHILD!!!!!

carb #2.....8N9510C.....NO PROBLEMS!!!!! !

Make up your own mind which you would rather have on your "N", as these two carb's are the ones replacing the original TSX Marvel/Schebler carbs. Both supposably are the accepted replacement carb's.

Buyer be forewarned!!!!!

JMHO

Gary :roll: :(

No wonder that carb. was leaking on your floor. That is a good sized crack.

I'd bet there were more cracks in that same area, that you can't see. What ya got there is an air sucker. Wouldn't make for a very good running engine!!!

Gary :shock:

Dan;

I understand your feelings about those carbs. I particularly did not like the casting of that carb. the thickness in certain areas, looked pretty thin, and the jet hole were either not finished on the threds or not complete to recieve the adjustment needles. I did finally get the one like that done, but I will never do another carb. like that. Too much worry about getting it right.

I think Hobo, mentioned these carbs in one of his posts, that he did not like working on them either.

To each his own. My FIL was going to buy one for his 8N, and I told him no way!!! He ended up getting the other kind(the cheaper model) and he like those.

Thanks for the reply.!!!

Gary :)

Gary;

Not to raise your stress level, but I thought other readers of your fine post would like to see a picture of what that crack in the bottom of my POS looks like. It is the white (talcum powder) line just below the large plug.

Gary;

I think you have nailed this one. The black ones are a POS. As you know I have had nothing but headaches with the black one I bought. There was a crack in the bottom around the plug that was likely caused by the assembler that tightened the plug so hard that it cracked the casting at the bottom of the float bowl. There is porosity in the metal in the top of the carb as well causing the thing to leak around the float valve and down into the throat so that I had a puddle of gas on the floor overnight. The top and bottom did not mate properly and I had to re-surface the bottom so that I could get a good seal from bottom to top.
Maybe the answer is to either buy the silver (cheaper) one or rebuild an original one.

Gary - I went through a nightmare with my 1948 8N rebuild a few months back. During the engine rebuild, I decided to rebuild the carb as well. I could not get the engine to run well at anything under 1200 RPMs. To make a long story short - the brand new jets I got from Tisco were not sized correctly. I opened two packages with the exact same part number, and the jet opening was vastly different. After weeks of troubleshooting, we finally figured out I had the wrong jet sizes installed. After I found, and put the right sizes in - the engine purred.

If memory serves me correctly, the idle jet opening was about .030", the economizer was .047" and the main was .074".

Good luck,
Dan
