I have heard of it being done on the tail gate of a pickup in the farm yard. I did them on a regular work bench . Clean diesel fuel and be careful. No problem. One thing I did learn over the years was to not take the pumping plungers out of the head unless absolutely necessary. They often form a slight ridge on at their outer most travel point and can scuff the plunger coming out. I had a diesel repair shop mess one up for me one time as customer wanted to take it there. Few days later I had to take it apart again as one plunger stuck and it would not start. Another thing, don't handle the rotor with your bare hands not dripping in fuel. One of the instructors in service training held a rotor in his hand while he talked to us about not holding it in his hand. Then he showed us it would not fit back into head . Put it back into fuel with head and after break time it went right back together easily.
