OK, here goes. I have an early '60s Case 530 Utility (not CK) with a type 31 backhoe and a type 42 loader. The tractor does not have a serial number plate but the serial numbers for both the backhoe and loader are in the 1962 range. It has a gas engine, shuttle, dual-range, case-o-matic, and 4-speed trans. When I got it, the shuttle would not go into reverse. The previous owner had traced the problem to a broken synchro and bought a replacement but never installed it. By the time I had the replacement installed, I understood why he never did it, that was one heck of a job.
During disassembly, I removed the small plug and drained the torque converter itself. I assumed it would refill itself when I put everything back together and refilled the torque tube. Was that a good assumption?
I can put the shuttle in drive or reverse when the engine is shut off but get gear grinding when I try to engage drive or reverse with the engine running. The clutch pressure guage reads about mid range with the clutch out but drops to about 1/4 range when I press in the clutch pedal.
This morning I tried to start the tractor with the shuttle in drive and the trans in neutral. When the engine caught, the tractor drove up and over 8" blocks before I could stop it. Why would the tractor move forward with the trans in neutral?
This should be enough to get us started. I have restored old cars in the past, but never a tractor. I may have bitten off more than I can chew :)
