Ted, when my family lived in NW Colorado our '63 830 dual range diesel pulled 5 bottoms easily. Our altitude was approximately 7,000 ft and it was very hilly. The 830 had no trouble at all with 5 bottoms in the tough adobe soil there.
When we brought the tractor back to central Texas it would walk away with 5 bottoms and never look back. It would have pulled 6 there even in the old tight black gumbo soil and the sandy soil spots would have been a piece of cake. All thing are relative, what may work for some in some conditions may not for others based on soil, altitude, topography etc.

How could you sell the 830 against competitor's tractors with similar HP if you only advertised it was a 4-5 plow or worse yet, 3-4 plow tractor?
