jeff you shouln't have to split the tractor to replace the rings. the oil pan will have to come off to take the connecting rod bolts loose. the cylinder head will have to come off and pull the pistons out the top of the engine, the crankshaft will be in the way on the bottom side. check at the top of the cylinder with your finger for a ridge. if there is one, it should be removed before taking out the pistons. cylinder should be at least honed. while you are there, it would be a good time to replace the rod and main bearings, hardly anymore labor to do that while it is torn down. also might want to replace sleeves if it has them, pistons might be worn too. not trying to scare you, but it could be more than just rings. before you tear into it, go buy a repair manual and read it before you start. I & T are ok ones.
