Good question actually. I think I figured out (the hard way of course) last summer that the rear most cylinder is the number 1. Even though it is the back of the tractor, it is like the front of the engine. I remember turning the engine by hand (with all spark plugs out, and matching the piston travel to the rotation of the rotor. (I told you I did it the hard way!) I'm not 100% on this, more like 90%. :) Chuck
