This sounds like a dumb question until you think about it for a while. Is the number one cylinder the one on timing gear end of engine or is it on the fan radiator end? I need to know for timing purposes on my Model G. Thanks

Thanks to all for your replies. I know many times one interprets a good response several ways. I can now time the little G and get her running. I am finishing restoring this 1949 and did not have to do much to the engine so I didn't have it open to confirm my thoughts. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question. I appreciate all your answers. Ray A

Ray, if you look all answers are the same and correct. The rear most cylinder on the tractor, which is the pulley end is #1

The front of the ENGINE is always #1 cylinder in an Allis or any other tractor. In the Allis G, the front of the ENGINE points toward the back of the tractor. Thus, the cylinder farthest to the back of the tractor (or front of the ENGINE) is the #1 cylinder. Remember that the Continental engine in the model G tractor has a firing order of 1342 instead of the 1243 as most all of the AC built engines in the larger tractors.

Been there, done that... in reply to Ray A, 10-12-2004 17:20:11
Good question actually. I think I figured out (the hard way of course) last summer that the rear most cylinder is the number 1. Even though it is the back of the tractor, it is like the front of the engine. I remember turning the engine by hand (with all spark plugs out, and matching the piston travel to the rotation of the rotor. (I told you I did it the hard way!)

I'm not 100% on this, more like 90%. :)
