But in the end, you're probably still right. The effect of our medical sophistication will be to sustain ourselves until something overwhelming comes along, and quite possibly wipes out the human race rather than just weeds it out.
Some bacteriologist guy said we're about 2 mutations away from a fatal, incurable air-borne virus that could wipe out the human race. AIDS might very well have done it, had it been airborne.
