Radon is very serious. However there are several factors that go into that number. If the air in that basement hasn't been stirred up (HVAC not on) or no one currently lives in the house, the radon can accumulate and give you a "worst case" number.
Radon fan systems can be installed rather cheaply. Or, you can google radon meter rental and rent them pretty cheap as well. I remember it was around $150 for a whole month, and you can split the cost with a whole bunch of buddies for that month. Pretty straight forward machine to use, and comes with a printer unit to print results. you might try several more tests. If you repeatedly get high numbers, it's time for a radon fan.
