I'm buying a house and had an inspection done on it and everything came back good except the radon test it was at 8.2 and they tell me it should be under 4, I have no idea what theses numbers represent.
Is Radon really something to be concerned about or is it just a bunch of hog wash and a way to get your mony by venting it?

I also have a high reading. This is serious stuff. Radon can lead to cancer problems.
I'm having a "radon mitigator" coming to my house. Call your county health department for info. The gas is odorless and you can't see it, it is in the soil in some areas; comes up thru an opening in your basement.

Radon is very serious. However there are several factors that go into that number. If the air in that basement hasn't been stirred up (HVAC not on) or no one currently lives in the house, the radon can accumulate and give you a "worst case" number.

Radon fan systems can be installed rather cheaply. Or, you can google radon meter rental and rent them pretty cheap as well. I remember it was around $150 for a whole month, and you can split the cost with a whole bunch of buddies for that month. Pretty straight forward machine to use, and comes with a printer unit to print results. you might try several more tests. If you repeatedly get high numbers, it's time for a radon fan.

What is funny about the Radon gas thing is that the government throws up a red flag for it but it is okay for people to inhale nicotine.

It is cause the government makes a fortune in taxes off of it.

It depends on how tight your basement is. My old house is sand filled rock laid. Radon should be all over it but the air is always moving as it is not real tightly sealed. We have had it checked twice. The first was border line and it was very calm. The next fellow was a little more honest. He had the meter in the basement for a week. He printed out a report that showed the highs and lows. It was only close one hour the whole week. He told me to leave the few air leaks I have and not to worry. All they do is install a ventilation fan under the concrete floor vented to the outside.

Amazing how the general public running around purchasing and taking iodine pills in North America. Worrying about a nano rem of iodine dose. Yet they eat bananas, breast feed thier children, live at high altitudes, fly in aircraft.
Worst of all they don't worry about breathing in radon gas.A source of very nasty internal alpha dose.
