Boiler furnaces have to have the water treated with an additive to prevent pitting just like cylinder liners in heavy duty diesel engines. Soft water is much better also. Your local dealer should have a test kit and details. Be sure and write down test results.
Some manufacturers have had so many problems they want a water sample to test for you.
As you can see it is possible to buy somebody else's problem.
