Depends on what you need. The 2011 and older Explorer can tow and has a lot more interior room and can havea third row seat, it can also go "off road" a little better than the Escape but you pay for with 16-20 MPG fuel usage.
The Escape is much smaller gets 24 to 30 MPG and can go off road if you're daring but its AWD system is much better for use at highway speed with streatches of ice and snow.
Surprisingly, the Escape actually holds its value better than the older Explorers and will probably hold it even better as fuel continues to go up.
