I've got a 290 farmboss and it started cutting out on me last spring. Choked it and it fired up for a little while and died.
Mine was the fuel line. Cracked right were it enters the gas tank. I ended up using generic fuel line instead of the stihl molded one and cut the nipple piece out of the old and snaked the new line through it.
It sure sounds like that could be your problem as well.
