was the crankcase and pickup real dirty? could be the top end is full of sludge and not letting oil return to pan fast enuff. also there should be a pressure relief valve either on the pump or somewhere on oil system...spring could be getting weak. one last thing...did you check main and rod bearings while you had pan off?
