Years ago when we first tried duals, it was recommended to go with a size smaller. The main tire was already leaving a track before the dual did much. Never again. What works well is a worn tire of the SAME size for the dual if it's only used part time. And/or run the dual softer than the main tire if axle loading, or especially rough ground is a concern.
