First of all, its the Generator NOT the Voltage Regulator that gets/needs Polarized, its just easy to use the BAT and GEN/ARM terminals on the VR to Polarize the Generator.
Second, if its wired right the BAT terminal on the VR SHOULD ALWAYS BE HOT as it eventually wires to the hot ungrounded battery post via the ammeter. It (BAT on VR) wires to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter and the ammeters other Supply terminal gets to the hot ungrounded battery post.
If the ammeter showed a heavy discharge that can be caused if the cutout relay contacts inside the VR were sticking in the closed position. If they opened and arent sticking anymore she may be okay now???
