Bill,
like others, I was surprised several years back when my foot started to hurt and within a day, I couldn't touch it or think about anything but getting rid of the pain.
Diagnosed as gout, I keep indomethacin and colchisine handy. Trick is to start the meds as soon as it comes on, don't wait till it hurts real bad. Have tried to stay away from shellfish and bad foods. Have had one attack in last 6 months and the meds took care of it within a day. Just on Monday, doctor said my uric acid level was on the high side of normal (7.1) so we agreed that another pill was probably not warranted. I take enough already. LOL.
Like some others, I'm surprised at how many people get it. And I know it's widespread when I see drug advertisements on TV ($$$$) for it.
