Completely O/T Gout

Do any of you guys suffer from Gout, I am getting it more and more in my feet and knee and it can be desperately painful. I do have pills I can take from the doctor but not happy with this due to the regularity of it and possible side effects. I was reading the other night that black cherrys or cherry consentrate can help. Have you guys got any home remedies that help as I need to get fit for the spring and working on my tractors after the winter.
Thanks
Bill

Hey Bill. Apple Cider Vinegar. A shot glass twice a day for a few days and then once a day. A magnesium supplement 2 or 3 times a week also helps. I don't know that I have actually had gout, but get pretty stoved up now and then and start hating life. 3 days of vinegar and I get out of bed and move around like a kid, 2 days of magnesium and no more arthritus cramps.

I feel your pain. I am a frequent flyer when it comes to the gout. I take allopurinol 300mg everyday to reduce the uric acid. I still will get the gout but not as often. When I get the gout I take Indomethocin which is hard on the stomach and makes me very tired but is nothing compared to the pain if I don't take it. Drink lots of water.

Good Luck.

Do you have any sassafras growing over there ? It's been a natural herbal remedy used by Native Americans and is touted nowadays as well. Has good anti-inflammatory properties.

It grows like a weed around here in Connecticut. I make sassafras tea every spring out of the root shavings. Keeps evil spirits away...

Im with the allopurinol crowd. It really works if you take it daily. All the home remedies and snake oil in the world may have helped my head but they didnt do anything for stopping the joint damage it was doing. Indomethicin helped me a lot with the pain, but like any other pain killer it just masks the pain it doesnt cure the problem. Plus it was blowing my kidneys.

What works best for me is to eat 1 or 2 bananas a day, and or drink a glass or 2 of cherry juice. Make sure it's cherry juice and not cherry flavored juice. Still have flare ups occasionaly but not near as bad.

Got it for the first time last August. Took Indomethicin to get thru that attack, and have been on allopurinol since. No more flare-ups yet

Tart cherry juice will do the trick. At least it does for me. It needs to be TART cherry juice. It is very sour and comes concentrated and the better stuff comes frozen concentrate.

I tried to inclutde a link..

Bill........join the allopurinol crowd. Usual cause is spiced sandwitch meat, asparagus, wine and cheese.

Howsomevers; I think yer bangers and haggis are safe to eat. Gout, curse of the drinking class. .......hic, Dell

sassafras is the principle flavoring to "Root Beer" sparkling beverages. Sassafras tea was the favorite of drink of wimps in the old timey Western shoot'em-ups. Even the "ladies" drank Champagne. .......Dell, the historian

its what i quit that cured mine . NO asparagass.rum or clamato juice. gout has been good for 5 years dont like pills try to eliminate sure cases first. gerald

I can eat bacon and maybe a piece of ham, but I don't dare look at sausage. Also shrimp can cause my gout. The cause is an amino acid and yes the indomethacin and the allopurinol are my standard medicines with colchicine for the flares. I tell people the one of the ritis brothers live with me [arthur] and his cousin gout. get it under control and have a great day.

I'm 35 and have had 3-4 bad flare-ups in the foot. Woke up to the first one and thought I had broken my foot somehow. I've broken bones, crushed fingers, but by far, Gout is the worst pain I've ever experienced. I havent had one in almost a year due to cutting back on beer and drinking all thewater I can stand in a day. Just my .02

I have had it for the last 18 years. I thought I broke my foot also the first time. I take Indomethacin, Doc says one more and I am going on allopurinol. I went about 3 years no problems, now this winter I had three attacks. Tried all the home remedies I could find and nothing worked.

Gout is too much uric acid in the blood primarily from red meats, wine, and shell fish. It manifests itself as a build up of crystals in the joints. In my case in the ball of my foot. So painful I couldn't even let the sheets touch it. had to cut the side out of a shoe so I could walk.
Docs put me on several meds that had mediocre results. I finally went to a nutritionist that recommended cutting back on the high uric acid foods, duh! i had already done that!, and drink water till your urine is clear. In my case about 2 gallons a day. Cleared it up in about 3 days.

Ever since then I make sure I stay very hydrated and haven't had a problem since.

It's a pain like no other. I've been on allopurinol for years, but am trying to try to go without it if possible. Like the others say, plenty of water....watch the red meats. Another help I've found is that if I feel a flareup coming on, I go and lay on the couch with the offending foot up on the back. Uric acid is heavier than blood, which is why gout settles in your lower extremidies.

Hurts don't it !!! I get it once in awhile . Last time took long time to get over it . I usually knock it out with cherries ,tart cherry juice, bananas and lots of water ,,,,lots of it . Last bout has Dr. puzzled ,,me too . He did stick a BIG needle right into the joint of my big toe to see whats going on ...now ,leem tell ya,,,,that hurt a tad .

Bill you are from Scotland so maybe you are not going to like this! My dad used to suffer from it terribly and my uncle used to get it in his hand occasionally. I read somewhere that salmon could aggravate it:
" Certain fish and shellfish are not good at all for you if you are susceptible to gout. Salmon has high levels( of Purines) as does shrimp and crab. In fact, salmon has twice the levels as chicken. It is a shame salmon is bad for gout patients, as this otherwise excellent food has healthy doses of omega 3 oils that actually help in treating gout."
By coincidence they both liked salmon very much. when I told them what I had read they both stopped eating it and coincidence or not, both of them never ever had another attack. To those that like cranberry juice, yes it is very good stuff but if you are taking warfarin as an anticoagulant cranberry juice is not recommended.

When I say I have never had it, you will know what I am not missing but my brother gets it and makes him howl.
Wikipedia maybe of interest here but it seems plenty of water will make the system flush it.
worth reading..

Guys I didnt actually believe so many people suffered from Gout, must be much more common than I thought.
I have heard a lot about the foods which seem to encourage it, for me it was shell fish initially and perhaps wine and beer but now seems like it flares up with anything. It has been bothering me more or less all the time for the past few weeks. I think I will go try some of the suggestions offer on here, my wife and son,s keep telling me I dont drink enough so will start with that along with the cherry drinks. Thanks for now.

Bill,
like others, I was surprised several years back when my foot started to hurt and within a day, I couldn't touch it or think about anything but getting rid of the pain.

Diagnosed as gout, I keep indomethacin and colchisine handy. Trick is to start the meds as soon as it comes on, don't wait till it hurts real bad. Have tried to stay away from shellfish and bad foods. Have had one attack in last 6 months and the meds took care of it within a day. Just on Monday, doctor said my uric acid level was on the high side of normal (7.1) so we agreed that another pill was probably not warranted. I take enough already. LOL.

Like some others, I'm surprised at how many people get it. And I know it's widespread when I see drug advertisements on TV ($$$$) for it.
