JDM.......Gordo has it right, quality dogs take time to raise BEFORE breeding, do the testing.
In 1972, I was having trouble moving 20-angus beef cows from irrigated paddock to paddock so I started looking for good Border Collie. My 2 cowboy brothers-in-laws said I did not want a BC, they recommended Australian Shepherd. Never heard of AS so went to library to look'em-up. Turns out iff'n it ain't AKC, it ain't a dog. No AS in the books. Turns out, I found an AS in the want-ads before I found BC. My BIL's were right. They also didn't think much of my Angus's. One thought Herefords were the way to go; the other thought Shorthorns were the best. Go figger?
I have since buried 8-Aussies on my RockyRidge SheepStation at the foot of 14K Mt Rainier .......Dell, head shepherd and Aussie lover
