A mining company had a mine that straddled the Missouri-Kansas border some years back, and since Kansas and Missouri assess on different days of the year, the mining company moved the big excavator (Multi-million$) before tax day every year and moved it back a couple days later.
One New Year's Day they forgot, and the township assessor saw the big machine sitting on his side of the line on his way to church. He went home and got his camera and called a couple witnesses.
I am assuming someone at the mine got fired for that. It was a big enough deal that the township and county had to roll back their tax rates for that year.
