I have been using one about like what you describe for about 12 years and have had zero problems with it. I use it fairly heavially even pressure pot sand blast with it. Have to let it catch up from time to time. Mine at least is a Campbell Hausfield one with a sears cover. Noisy as heck but other than that fine and it sits and run in an uhneated shed too. Use down around 0 sometimes.
