Couple days ago USA today ran an article about a professor at Univ Colorado who said between 1979 and 2009 sea ice of the approximate size of Alaska located up near Greenland had melted in that time period. This was an area that normally stayed frozen year round prior to 1979. There are quite advanced satelite photos available to monitor these things now along with GPS to know very accurately where you are looking on the planet. One wonders what caused all that melting if it did happen in that short a period of time.
