That is what we used to call a melting pot,used to melt lead to seal joints with after punching some okam cord around the cast iron sewer pipe joint. The solid lead was put in the pot and melted by the torch on the bottom of the tool,then when the pipe joint was ready the liquid lead was poured around the joint and was worked with a wooden paddle till it was solid again.Took a skilled craftsman to do a good leading job.
