Technology has improved considerably on heat pumps in the last few years. 2 stage units are pretty efficient. What kind of backup system do you have? Electric backup will run the bill up also. The older units shut down at 15 to 10 degrees and the backup kicks in. Consider a Geo Thermo unit if you have room for the wells or slinky lines. With the tax credit it won't run that much more than a new heat pump unit and it will definitely pay for itself in a short time.
