Hi, I signed up to an online website that let me look up my family tree (ancestry.ca, I suppose there must be an ancestry.com for the US). Anyways, I found direct ancestors right back to 1590. It was very interesting. I was born and raised in the country surrounding a tiny village where everyone knows everyone else and we know that most of us are related "somehow or other". It was surprising to see just how many of the local family names are in my family tree.
There are government census data back to around 1878 and most of my family's occupations were listed as "farmer". It occurs to me that they probably thought their life was pretty good. And I'm sure it was. But imagine just how hard things/life must have been four hundred years ago. They were farming the same land that I have trod my entire life... It makes me happy to still have a little farm there. It's a comfortable feeling to have such deep roots.
