"they had pulled their kids out of the school system because of the child welfare folks"
OK, so they pulled their kids out of school. I'd say the reasons may or may not have been because of child protective services (or whatever they're called in Iowa). If child protective services got involved, then someone must have filed a complaint. Is it just maybe possible that they were reported to CPS by the school, and pulled their kids out in retaliation? At any rate, CPS certainly didn't force them to pull the kids out of school.
"EVERYTHING dealing with those folks is suppoesed to be tight liped" [sic]
Assuming by "folks" you mean CPS. Yes, they are supposed to maintain confidentially to protect the children. That privacy doesn't extend to the parents. Any confidentially rights they had expired along with their children.
It is the responsibility of the authorities to investigate suspicious deaths. They're doing their jobs. It IS relevant that they took the kids out of school, because a disproportionate number of child abuse cases involve supposedly "home schooled" children. If the parents did nothing wrong, then they should not have to worry about a routine investigation.
