The same goes for many things. Certainly not just Walmart.
I used to buy motor oil in 5 gallon pails or 55 gallon drums because it was cheaper per gallon, that way. Not any more. Many times now, the best price is buying in quarts or 2.5 gallon jugs.
Same happened recently when I went to buy 134A refrigerant. I use to buy the big cannisters. Now, cheaper in cases of 12 ounce cans.
And, you really have to watch for package-size changes, like Power Service did recently with its white-bottle fuel treatment.
Seems packaging also matters. Recently, I was looking for new DVD burner drives. New Egg had the same brand and model in two versions. OEM in plain box, or retail version in fancy box. OEM was - free shipping, $15.99 price, and a mail-in $15.99 rebate. I.e. it was totally free. The retail version was $28 plus $2.99 shipping.
I got the free DVD burner and still can't figure how anybody made any money on the deal. Maybe from rebates not claimed?
