Ya gotta watch 'em..........

While I was in our local Walmart yesterday, I picked up a package of two ball point pens that I like.

A package of two was $2.88. A package of four was $6.44, more than twice the price of a pack of two. I thought, WTF, and took a package of two. I mentioned it to the gal a checkout and her reply was, "You have to keep your eyes open".

Large boxes of cerial, economy packages etc. are all in the same boat.

I know of a dude that does the stratagy for a living, what people will actualy buy, and think they have a bargin.

We often hear of 50% off, the boss is away so we are going toooooo.....We are overstocked so we are going tooooo....

There is not a single item in the store that does not have some kind of well thought out plan for its placment.

Where is the milk in every store? Where is the TV guide, the nickle candy? Even the lights, and music are well thought out by numerous studies.

We have a local auto delership that has a push, pull, or drag sale---gurenteed $1,500.00 for any trade in. I must say we have alot of foolish folks that bite on that one............They could other wise get the $2,000.00 dollar no trade in allowance.

Notice how orange the oranges are in the orange plastic woven bag? How about what we think to be clear plastic wrap for the meat that has a red tint to it? Then again with the green plastic wrap around the produce?

Our system is revolving around good stratagy, or deception, rather than a fair and honest hand shake dealing.

My daughter in law worked at Best Buy for a while, and they have the NO THREE TIMES policy. Before you leave the store with any purchase the sales person must ask you three times to use their extended warrenty, and several other high pressure pitches, like financing etc.

I can't remember the last time i bought a ballpoint pen.Whenever i write a cheque in a store i ask for a pen to use, half the time i forget to give it back.

Most times I keep a itty bitty calculator in my shirt pocket for just such occasions when the per unit price is not posted. The cereal aisle is bad about that. Yeah I'm cheap. I want to save a few pennies just as bad as they want to gouge them out of my pocket. TDF

Went to flea market one day. A fellow had the flat carpenter pencils .05 each or a bundle of 10 for a $1.00. You wouldn't believe the number of people picked up the bundle thinking thay had a bargain.

I use the calculator on my cell phone every time I go into the store. It's hard to make a straight comparison - they juggle the weights/prices so you usually can't simply figure the cost per unit in your head.

A 28 day supply of medicine costs almost a dollar more than two 14 day packages. . .

bought a monitor for the compuker last week, the gal at the checkout asked me if I wanted an extended warantee on it.I said why,are these things prone to failure, should I go somewhere where they sell the good ones? no more sales pitch

A grocery store chain, which will charge me with TRESPASSING IF I EVER ENTER THEIR LOCAL STORE, would post a special price on their produce in dollars per pound as in the Imperial weights and measures, but on your bill it is priced out in the metric weights and measures, therefore, really CONFUSING any INDIVIDUAL!

I CAUGHT ONTO THIS, BECAUSE OF THAT I HAVE BEEN BAND FROM THIS LOCAL STORE. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THEY DO THIS WITH THEIR MEATS AS WELL!

When you see special prices here in Canada, they are really special, you will eventually be charged twice the listed price!

Then the way they change the price of gas is totally a different story. You may see it change as much as 10 cents per litre, when converting it to gallons, mutiply by 4.54 l/g!

Here they spray the meat with red dye. Drives me nuts because now idiots won't buy real meat at the market. "Ewwww its grey, I like mine fresh at the grocery store, nice and red."

The same goes for many things. Certainly not just Walmart.

I used to buy motor oil in 5 gallon pails or 55 gallon drums because it was cheaper per gallon, that way. Not any more. Many times now, the best price is buying in quarts or 2.5 gallon jugs.

Same happened recently when I went to buy 134A refrigerant. I use to buy the big cannisters. Now, cheaper in cases of 12 ounce cans.

And, you really have to watch for package-size changes, like Power Service did recently with its white-bottle fuel treatment.

Seems packaging also matters. Recently, I was looking for new DVD burner drives. New Egg had the same brand and model in two versions. OEM in plain box, or retail version in fancy box. OEM was - free shipping, $15.99 price, and a mail-in $15.99 rebate. I.e. it was totally free. The retail version was $28 plus $2.99 shipping.

I got the free DVD burner and still can't figure how anybody made any money on the deal. Maybe from rebates not claimed?

I just bought a drum of 15-40 and a drum of 10-30, in 5/10. The diesel equaled out to 7 dollars per gallon, which was cheaper than gallons at tsc.
The 10w30 was $338.95
Thw 15w40 was 439.95
I forgot what a quart costs now but if you know, you can divide it out and get a per quart or gallon price. Ist also much eaiser for me to have the oil right here in bulk, and not have to mess around with a bunch of quart bottles. I take the used oil to a friend with a used oil furnance. I guess in my situation with so many trucks amd machines its eaiser for me.

I buy the jug container of oil at Walmart because for the same price as AZ or Advance you get five quarts instead of four. Now you have to watch WM because they down sized some to four quarts.

Last diesel 15W-40 oil I bought was Delo 400 LE and Shell Rotella T. $1.90 per quart in 2.5 gallon jugs.

Try to find a half gallon of ice cream nowadays!!
The cheaper brands pack it that way but the "pemium?" brands are giving you a lot less for the same old price!

There is such a thing as unfair trade practices and you can report them to consumer affairs. As far as the price of gas, about 3 or 4 years ago Petro Canada changed the policy on their Petro points cards. I think because it was crooked. Anyone could get a free Petro points card which was "supposedly" supposed to save you 3.5 cents a litre. If you didn't have a card you didn't get the discount. The problem was that the price was jacked up 3.5 cents a litre in the first place. I bet they made millions off of people who weren't regular customers and didn't want to be bothered applying for a Petro points card. I think the Gov't. still owned Petro Canada at the time but not sure. Some people claim that the price of gas should be adjusted for the temperature. Most pumps have a label saying they are corrected for 15 deg.C but between -30 and 30 above, there can be a pretty good difference in actual volume. Dave

Dave:

Actually I learned about "scanning code of practice", through CBC, it is up to the grocery store chain to police it themselves!

I reported the misrepresentation (over a one year period) to numerous government departments, I actually took pictures of their questionable displays, then a female copper shows up in my driveway informing me about being charged with trespassing if I ever enter that particular store!

Lawyer's letter from the grocery store chain stating same thing, this is how corporate canada works!

I have talked to other individuals confirming pricing issues, but they refuse to get involved!

The store was just trying to intimidate you. How can they charge you with trespassing when it's open to the public and you didn't do anything wrong? They might not have liked that took pictures but unless there's more to the story, how can they have you charged? Were you riding a horse in the store? I bet if you would have had a good lawyer on your side would be a different story. They don't want you in the store because you could alert other customers to their deceipt. Writing a letter to the editor of the local paper or even better, your local news might have a trouble shooter that looks into these things and the whole process is broadcast on TV. They have a trouble shooter here and 9 times out of 10, the guilty party clears it up so they they don't look like the crooks they are on TV. Dave

The store is private property and they can banish anyone they like.... same as you or me. That said... it's not too bright of them to do that. Sounds like a job for the local TV 'On your side' type segment where they 'investigate' consumer complaints and attempt to embarass the business into backing down, etc. Normally I tend to think they're a bunch of vultures but perhaps in cases like this the store would back down pretty quick and come to some sort of settlement...

Not sure it is still done, but several national grocery chains were using carbon monoxide to cause meat to look redder thereby implying fresher. May not be dangerous but certainly deceptive.

Things are much different here in the cold north, the government, owns/controls the media. Many different forms of the media were informed, but NOBODY would step in and give me an ounce of support!

Talked to different lawyers and they ALL laughed at me! Sound FAMILIAR?

Yes it is all about INTIMIDATION, I have had to live with it for a VERY LONG TIME!

It"s all about demographics by that I mean they"re basing their pricing on the overall intellegience of the their clientel so if you aren"t buyer beware it"s their gain. My tip is take your calculator and beware, it"s nationwide and your case Canadian wide.

If there is no legitimate reason to ban someone from a store, I think could be considered harassment and/or discrimination. They did an experiment with that on the show, What would you do? The trouble shooter here I think does a lot of research before airing a consumer complaint on TV. I've seen some pretty shady business practices and I think they are only aired when the business is totally unwilling to try to remedy a problem they created. Most seem to get a dose of reality when the camera's are rolling or they hear it's going to aired before thousands of people. Dave

I discovered that several years ago when I noticed a 10 OZ bag of Fretos was $2.00 and a 15 OZ bag was $3.25

I'm probably in the colder North than you, here in Edmonton. Would have to know the whole story. Most lawyers are in it for the money. If it's not worth it for them, they aren't interested. They usually want a retainer up front as well. I dealt with one lawyer on my dads estate and he was good. A few years later I used him again and told him about a situation I had. I had a bad mark put on my credit rating that was totally bogus. This lawyer completely agreed and said that if I ever had a problem getting credit or a loan because of it, to let him know. He said he would love to go after Creditel, Equifax and the other credit bureau's because he was hearing a lot of similar stories. As long as a company is registered with one of the credit bureau's, they can put a bad rating on a customer without any investigation what so ever. Dave

Our daughter saw an ad once that said, "Buy one hot dog for the price of two, and get a second hot dog absoluely free!".

I wonder how many fell for that.

It will be the same here before to long. I say invade Canada now before it spreads to the White House. Wait! It already has. LOL

The other side of the coin..... last fall picked up 5qt jug of Valvoline full synthetic ( better than Mobil I) at Wmart and check-out said it was on sale for $10.00..sure you don't want some more??? No sale ad or nothin'! She knew it was a computer error. Went back and took all they had! $2.00 a qt! Normal on sale for $22-$24 for 5qt jug. Someone got thrown under the bus for that one I bet.

How big of a town are you in?? Write up a detailed flyer with help of a lawyer and get the word out. Your name doesn't have to mentioned. Make sure it's factual and lawyer will help with wording. You have heard of Ralph Nader havn't you??? When we all become "sheep" then we will all be eaten by the wolves!!

I don't know if anyone posted this but the best example i've seen the other day is a 20 oz mt dew was 1.79 and a 2 liter is 1.09, wow, do the math on that! no wonder you never see a 2 liter in the cooler

Legitimate reason = Private property. Only reason they need. Only reason you need. Only reason I need. You don't like my rules, F*** off. That simple. That's the way it should be too. It's just that it's poor optics for a business who derives their income from sales to the public...

For 25 years my wife & I have noticed 2 5lb bags are cheaper than 1 10 lb bag of anything. It used to be that you saved by buying larger sized portions with less packaging costs passed on to the buyer but not so now.

Was in a farm and ranch store needing some ATF.
Was $1 qt, but I needed quite a bit, so I reached for a 2-1/2 gallon (10 QT) jug. Took a double take when I noticed the 2-1/2 was priced at over $12 ??? I bought quarts :)

You must not write very much, or concern yourself with the appearance.

I need to project a professional image on my job.

(quoted from post at 19:02:18 01/03/11) Needless to say, I have bit of a REPUTATION IN THESE HERE PARTS!

I bet you do. I bet you do.

I get the feeling there's more to that story about getting banished from that store than you're telling us. Where's the part where you got dragged off the premises shouting "ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA!"

Menards is a local big box home iprovement store around here. They have a propane exchange for $15 for a 20 lb tank. Local hardware store will fill your take for $15.99.

One small detail - THE MENARDS TANK SAYS 17 LBS NET ON THE SIDE! Just a couple pennies, but times that by thousands of customers

If you have more than 1 walmart store in your town, check and see if there is a price difference between the stores. If they put a store in the poor section of town a lot of times the prices will be cheeper in that store than 1 in a richer part of town.
