I too have been on both sides, and when it's my turn to help out, I offer to do so with all of my out of pocket expenses like fuel, meals, (rooms if necessary) etc. being covered. At times the person I'm hauling for, travels with me. At other times not.
The longest trip so far has been a bit over 1200 miles one-way with no back haul. In that situation I was offered an additional twenty five cents per mile to cover vehicle wear and tear. I'm not a commercial hauler so close to break-even is fine with me.
Of course it's often a "you scratch my back I'll scratch your back" situation, which in the course of a lifetime, usually works out even.
