make sure that you have the correct firing order since you replaced the distributor cap and also check the timing and make sure the advace mechanism is working and is not sticking.
Check your distributor for bushing wear. Turn the engine over til the points close and the push radially (from the side) in several different directions on the distributor shaft as you watch the points. There should be no motion at the points. if you can put a dial gauge on it, the tolerance is something like 0.002".
