Oliver 55 Gas, Spittin and Spuddering and Backfire

Hi there, Hope someone can help. My super 55 runs great but just last week it started getting this little bully streak where it starts missing, spitting and spuddering and backfireing and then all at once it will run good for a while but then it will do it again. I replaced the distributor cap and reset the points but it didn't seem to help. Seems to run real good when you first start it until it warms up a bit. When it's acting up I tryed pulling a couple of spark plug wires to see if it was electrical and it doesn't seem to make it worse or better. Could it be a bad coil or condencer in the points. Has anyone had this problem? Any advice would be great. Thanks

When my Farmall H does that it means my gas line is getting clogged with rust flakes that have gotten past the sediment bowl. I'd try disconnecting the gas line at the carburetor and draining it into a container so you can see if it's flowing and if it has rust or dirt in it.

Ben,

I wouldn't know an Oliver 55 if it bit me, but my Ford 2000 has three fuel filters. One is inside the fuel pump. My 2000 starting doing something similar to what you're describing. I had good flow of gas out of the tank, but I noticed that the glass sediment bowl on the bottom of the carburetor was low on gas when it started missing. I pulled the top off the fuel pump and found that it was LOADED with trash. I cleaned it out and it fixed the problem immediately.

Good luck with your Oliver.

My 1550 started acting up this spring, missing and such. I thought for all the world it was a cracked cap,so I changed that. No difference. What had happened was that the nuts on the rocker arm shaft had worked loose at the rear of it and the valves weren't opening like they should.

make sure that you have the correct firing order since you replaced the distributor cap and also check the timing and make sure the advace mechanism is working and is not sticking.

Check your distributor for bushing wear. Turn the engine over til the points close and the push radially (from the side) in several different directions on the distributor shaft as you watch the points. There should be no motion at the points. if you can put a dial gauge on it, the tolerance is something like 0.002".

Thanks All, It seems everyone thinks it's fuel related. I will check the gas lines and sediment bowl for dirt today. It's a good place to start. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know. I'll keep you updated. Thanks Ben

Hello again, Just wanted to thank everyone for there input. I took some of everyones advice and the tractor seems to be running a lot better. I took of the fuel line and started draining in a can and found the was some gunk floating around in the fuel bowl so I cleaned that out, also took off the distributor cap to recheck the points and discovered the shaft operating the points was real sticky with old grease so I cleaned that up and relubed and reset the points. Found out the plug wires are old and are leaking spark so I need to replace them also. I found the linkage to the governer was also kinda of gunked up so I cleaned those shafts up and relubed with Liquid wrench silicon spray. I started it up and the tractor runs great and has never idled so good. Thanks Again for all your help. Ben
