Hello Dave2, Is your engine is turnig over, but not starting qwickly? it may not be the starter that is at fault. With good working glow plugs it should crank just a bit longer then normal, before starting. Going over the valves is one way to improve the initial stating time. Injectors ,if adjustable, would be another item to do. Fuel delivery is also a big thing in the colder months. Many variables to mention them all. Hope this helps ..............Guido.
