heavy duty starter???

Hey folks,
starter on my tractor (diesel) is a 1.9hp motor. Just read on a forum here that someone is selling 4hp starters for the same application that makes starting much quicker with less glowplug use yadda yadda.

Aside from maybe needing a stronger battery, can using this 4hp starter cause any damage to the motor? gear/measurements are the same.

Thanks, Dave

I dont see a higher HP starter motor as causing damage to the Diesel engine (if thats your question), its gonna crank it somewhat faster, but thats what youre lookin for..

If theres a faster higher torque engagement it may be a bit tougher on starter drive mechanisms or flywheel teeth.

As you mention more HP requires more current draw out of the battery so good batteries and heavy duty cables and connections are a must.

And a deep wallet.................. just found one online. About $700. I can stand to take a couple extra seconds to start up................

Thanks though.

Hello Dave2,
Is your engine is turnig over, but not starting qwickly? it may not be the starter that is at fault. With good working glow plugs it should crank just a bit longer then normal, before starting. Going over the valves is one way to improve the initial stating time.
Injectors ,if adjustable, would be another item to do. Fuel delivery is also a big thing in the colder months. Many variables to mention them all.
Hope this helps ..............Guido.

Don't know if there is room to bolt this brute on
but it should crank the engine faster than normal
idle rpms.
May as well go big if a swap is going to be made.

What specific tractor? I've bought many newer Chinese replacement starters rated at similar power ratings but gear-reduction instead of direct-drive. They spin the engine a little slower when hot, but much faster when cold.

On my GM diesels, the original Delco 27MT direct-drive is 2500 watts max.

Replacement gear-reduction 28MT is 2500, 3000, or 4000 watts. I've got all three versions and can't really notice the difference. All work great. I installed similar versions on some of my diesel tractors.

If you are talking about putting in a double-power starter - but still direct-drive - I'd be worried a bit about flyhweel damage. But, I'd need more data.

My German Farmall with the D-111 motor (3cyl 1.8 liter diesel). Nothing wrong with what I have now, I just get these good idea grenades that go off in my pocket sometimes  When all 3 GP's are working (don't ask), it starts about the first revolution.
