That's one side of the story...
Question is... why did he do what he did? Did he explain?
I've seen lots of times where I might go looking for say 3/8" hose and have to settle for 1/2" because they didn't have the right fittings for 3/8". Likewise... mabey he didn't have straight female fittings so he used swivels... and probably that is the case because there's a negligible price diffrence between them and it allows them to inventory less fittings and still get the job done... because 90% of the people that come through the door want/need swivels. You just happen to be the 10%. Oh well. As far as the price of the hose is concerned... ~4 bucks per foot is right about on the mark around here for a good 2 wire Gates or Parker hose. I use them as examples. Aeroquip and various others would likely be about the same. Now if you want to go buy a 1 wire thing like Dayco used to sell which is nothing more than a glorified heater hose... and it's rated for pressure today and will blow up in 1 year... then yeah... you can probably get it for 1.50-2 bucks a foot.
The fitting prices were also about normal for here. I've paid a lot more for some fittings. As far as the pioneer couplers go.. that may again go back to the fittings. If you wanted something in pipe thread and he didn't have it... but he had JIC or ORB... what's he to do? Give you one of each hose or the wrong nipples?
Ofcourse mabey he was just being an arsehole... but these are some possible, very plausible reasons for him doing what he did as I've dealt with these many times before.
