I wouldn't be too sure about the differential, though that's logical. It could be that the gears in the transmission are worn out or they have some rust pitting. Does it growl in road gear? If not, I wouldn't be too suspect of the diff. Also remember that a 705 has big fenders bolted to the rear end case and that tends to amplify or exaggerate what sounds are there; that is, it may not be that bad. It is a large task to undertake.
